Downloading Files using Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer has a number of bugs relating to downloading binary file data
(e.g. Word Documents, Acrobat Files - anything listed as a download on this
site). When downloading using Internet Explorer, you may experience:
-
"Gobbledegook" appearing in the browser instead of the expected file.
Fix 1: Try again - it only happens intermittently.
Fix 2: Right click on the link and select "Save Target As" to save the
file to your hard drive. NB. this will not work on pages where you are required
to agree to terms and conditions before downloading
-
Failure of links after downloading.
Fix: After downloading, click the browser's refresh button before
clicking on any link/button.
-
Missing links and buttons on the following page after downloading.
Fix: Click the browser's refresh button on the affected page.

Page "Hangs" or Times Out Part Way Through A Wizard
Some firewalls and proxy servers have not yet been undapted to handle
"viewstate", a hidden field used by ASP.NET. This is a problem with the
firewall/proxy server, not with ASP.NET, and causes the firewall or proxy
server to refuse to allow the server's (entirely harmless) response through to
your browser. You are most likely to encounter this problem when doing a larger
task, such as amending a page. There are a number of possible solutions which
you/your system administrator can apply:
-
Update your firewall software to the latest version
-
Change the rules on your firewall/proxy server
-
Change to a different firewall
