CARAT stands for Counseling Advice , Referral, Assessment and Through care.
Every prison in England and Wales
have CARAT workers and it is their job to make sure that prisoners with
drug problems get help and advice about how to tackle them.
Anyone with a drug problem coming in to prison is assessed, given
advice about their using and referred to the drug service they need.
CARAT workers give advice about drugs and their effects and offer group
work to prisoners who want to get more information, give up or cut down
on their using.
In-volve's CARAT team in HM YOI Feltham is also developing Identity and
Difference programmes and Accredited Drugs Training courses for
offenders who want to make a change. Our workers link with other
professionals to ensure that wherever a young person goes, the positive
steps they have made can be built upon.
