More About Redefining Sanity
This
national conference is aimed at those who want to play an effective
systemic role in developing services better able to meet the needs of
young people suffering psychological and emotional distress, and at
risk of becoming involved in violent crime. The disturbing
and disproportionate number of young black men with mental health
issues currently being held in Youth Offender Institutions leaves us in
no doubt that this is primarily a social care and not a health issue.
Figures show that as many as 80% of young people coming into contact
with the criminal justice system suffer psychological and emotional
distress, much of which is either misdiagnosed and/or unaddressed.
This
event brings together some of the most influential speakers on the
subject of mental health from a youth, social, communal, institutional,
and cultural perspective. It will give you access to some of the most
dynamic social thinkers on mental health and the needs of young black
men in Britain today, as well as an insight into new approaches being
developed to meet those needs.
The
severe emotional distress that is experienced by young people impacts
the whole of society and is set to continue into the future unless we
begin to proactively and systemically address the underlying issues.
It
is for this reason that this event will touch on effective parenting,
look at the way forward for young people’s services’interventions,
and address improvements needed within the criminal justice system.
