Over the past few years In-volve has been developing programmes that engage young people at the high end of risk, both through Youth Offending Teams and directly from the streets, into group coaching and emotional support activities known as RAW projects. Through feedback and consultation with young people themselves, by 2007 it became clear that Girls wanted and needed their own spaces and programmes, and so Little Miss Raw was born.
Young women in our most impoverished communities can be drawn into violent lifestyles through lacking the emotional support, family structure and leadership, and skills required to make informed and healthy life choices. LMR is a structured personal development programme for girls at-risk that engages groups thought ‘hard to reach’; provides a safe space for peer and professional support; and uses a combination of coaching and groupwork to
- develop understanding of individual identity and potential
- teach skills for making autonomous choices
- challenge and support values
- build emotional resilience
- provide new experiences, opportunities and role models
Little Miss RAW themes are drawn from the shared experiences of participants. These include identity, sexual behaviour, violence, relationships and communication skills.
Little Miss Raw works in close partnership with local Youth Justice and Community Safety teams to identify girls at-risk, facilitate referral and engagement, and support onward pathways. Our community outreach and social marketing generate self-referrals by word of mouth among young women.
We provide non-intrusive need and risk assessment for each participant, plus individual support for emotional needs, onward referral or safeguarding processes if required throughout the programme.
